Holiday beach strolls typically create pleasant memories for beachgoers, as they bask in the sun’s rays, the relaxing sounds of the waves and the crustaceous inhabitants of the sands. Being able to leave the world behind on a scenic walk is what a lot of people enjoy, so what could possibly ruin it?

What about coming across human remains on the shore?

In British Columbia, 2007, a girl was strolling along the beach when she discovered a deserted shoe. Although littering wouldn’t be an issue that would concern her, she soon discovered the stomach-turning remains of a human foot inside the sock. Over 12 years, 15 more feet were discovered and this frenzy birthed a multitude of hoaxes and theories, speculating what and who caused the appearance of these human remains.

“We get some very interesting tips that come in about serial killers, or containers full of migrants that are sitting at the bottom of the ocean. Aliens — had that one as well,”Laura Yazedjian, a forensic anthropologist.

Public speculation and fear mounted, understandably, as the inexplainable appearances of bodily remains continued to be reported without any explanation. However, investigators began to identify the people the feet belonged to and link the believed causes of death, all of which were a “…suicide or an accident”.
