To start 2023 off, co-creator of Rick and Morty Justin Roiland was dropped by Adult Swim after domestic abuse charges. Roiland pleaded not guilty and is currently awaiting trial after being charged with corporal injury and false imprisonment by menace, fraud, violence or deceit. These charges relate to an incident back in 2020 involving an unidentified woman who Roland was living with, as well as dating, at the time.

In a statement made by Roiland’s lawyer, they insisted and claimed that Roiland is innocent and they’re:

“…look forward to clearing Justin’s name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible.” — BBC news Entertainment

Just yesterday, Adult Swim announced Justin Roiland’s departure on Twitter. He also resigned from the game company he co-founded Squanch Games, as CEO over a week ago.

Rick and Morty offical Twitter account post.

Roiland has also worked with other studios such as Disney+, being the co-creator of Solar Opposites, and whether they will follow suit is yet to be seen.

But what will happen from here?

Adult Swim announced that there will be a recasting for the characters of Rick and Morty, who Roiland voiced. Dan Harmon will be the main showrunner. However, Roiland will still maintain credit as a co-creator.

Officially, the show will continue for future seasons. How many, we’ll be unaware of until the time comes. As Roiland voiced both of the main characters, it may be a challenge to decide who’s fit for the roles. It shouldn’t however sway fans from continuing to watch the series, as there is still an entire team of producers, animators and crew who have and continue to work hard on each and every episode. The actions of one person shouldn’t devalue the show entirely. Adult Swim has made the right choice to remove Roiland and I’m sure the show will continue fine without him.

Another Pre-Trial hearing has been set for the 27th of April. We’ll see what happens moving on.
